The Feather Alert Program, provides a statewide alert system for missing Indigenous persons. A Feather Alert may be requested by law enforcement or a Tribe when an Indigenous person is reported missing and specific criteria are met.

These criteria include confirmation that the person is Indigenous, has been officially reported missing, and that available local and Tribal resources have been utilized. Additionally, there must be reason to believe the individual is in danger, such as threats to their physical safety, risk of trafficking, or the presence of a mental or physical condition or substance use disorder. There must also be information that could assist the public in helping locate the individual.

Law enforcement is required to determine whether the criteria are met within 24 hours of the initial report. If no determination is made within that timeframe, a Tribe may directly request activation through the California Highway Patrol’s Emergency Notification and Tactical Alert Center (ENTAC).

If you believe a missing Indigenous person may meet the criteria for a Feather Alert, contact local law enforcement immediately.
