In 1909, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) purchased 280 acres of land to be held in trust for the benefit of the San Joaquin or Big Sandy Band of Western Mono Indians.

There are thirteen lineal descendants their names are as follows: Alec, Beecher, Bob, Cheepo, Joe, Lewis, Major, Marvin, McCabe, Moore, Riley, Sample. There are currently five Tribal Council members who are working on existing and developing programs for early childhood education, workforce department, housing department, environmental department, finance department, social and human services department, human resources, community service, and gaming commissions.
